Learn How to Play Jazz

The Muskoka Saxophone Society will present its annual seminar “Jazz Playing 101” on September 7, 2008 at the newly remodelled Hideaway Pub, located at 11 Main Street in Huntsville.  The all day workshop is open to ALL instrumentalists and will be taught by Doug Banwell.  Doug is a recent émigré to Huntsville who played professionally in Toronto throughout the 1990’s. He studied jazz performance at Mohawk and York University. In addition to his many activities in the local music scene, Doug launched the Muskoka Jazz Jam this past winter, which takes place most Tuesday nights at the  Hideaway Pub.  You can visit www.muskokajazzjam.com to find out more about it.

Jazz Playing 101 will be a well-rounded presentation of many of the aspects of playing jazz.  Subjects include the blues, how to read lead sheets (including jazz chords and harmony), jazz history, how to learn tunes, practicing strategies, and more. There will be lots of demonstrations and attendees are encouraged to take part, so make sure to bring your instrument!  Each attendee will receive a free ‘how to get started’ kit. Whether you are a beginner or have had some experience in the jazz genre, you will enjoy this day of fun and learning.

Tickets are $30 for adults and $10 for students.  The workshop starts at 10:00am and goes until 4:00pm, with a break for lunch.  For tickets, call Kim Barlow at (705) 789-8860.  To find out more about the Muskoka Saxophone Society, visit www.muskokasax.com
